“Fortitude and Forty Days For Life!” Inserted in your bulletin this week is information regarding our Fall campaign of “Forty Days for Life.” The purpose of this is to bring to our attention the value and importance of all human life and the need for us to protect human life from conception to natural death. Forty Days of Life has both a Fall and Spring campaign so that we don’t forget this all-important issue and keep it in the forefront of our minds and hearts.

The number, 40, has great biblical significance. In the days of Noah and the flood, it rained for 40 days and 40 nights as God swept the earth clean and began new again. When God and Moses freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, Moses spent 40 days on Mt. Sinai as he received the 10 Commandments. The Israelites also spent 40 years in the desert on their journey to the Promised Land. Jesus himself spent 40 days and 40 nights fasting and praying in the desert in preparation for his public ministry. Today, liturgically, we traditionally have 40 days of Lent which is then followed by 40 days of Easter before the Feast of Jesus’ Ascension, followed by Pentecost. The number Forty (40) is considered a number of fullness in biblical language. Time enough for God to complete God’s plan and God’s work. With this in mind we have 40 days of prayer and petition and peaceful demonstration to end a culture of death in our country and to promote the value of all human life as a cherished gift from God.

This whole goal of “Fortitude and Forty Days for Life” is to promote a prayerful, peaceful and loving effort to protect human life and to persuade those who are seeking abortion to choose better alternatives. It is also a campaign to convince politicians to re-think and change our current legislation and policies which allows a woman to have an abortion at any time and for any reason, and in some states, even moments after delivery. Please read the insert in our bulletin to learn more and consider making a commitment to be counted among those who promote life as God intended and to do so in an uncompromising, yet loving way. Jan Hoelsher is our contact person and her number is listed on the sheet.

As September is here and October is fast approaching, (a month dedicated to Pro-life) this is a great time to do our part. We believe in a God who gave us life and a God who even raises the dead to new life! If Jesus stood up for us on the cross, let’s be sure to stand up for Him who says, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life!” (John 14:5)

Peace!

Fr. LeRoy
