The Epiphany Blessing of Homes with Chalk: in keeping with ancient Tradition, blessed chalk is used to mark the homes of the faithful on the Feast of Epiphany. Here is how it is used: With the members of the household present, one person writes the following above each doorway of the house using the blessed chalk.
20+C+M+B+16. As you do so, say the following prayer: “May God send his angels to dwell in our house. May he keep us aways in his peace and love. May he bless our coming and our going so that everyone who enters this house or goes forth from our home will be guided by the light of faith, hope, and love as were the three Wise men of old. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.”
This may be followed by an “Our Father…, Hail Mary…, and Glory Be…” which are said together if you wish. The insignia above the doorway stands for the current year and the legendary names of the three Magi: Caspar, Melchior and Belthazar, who presented Jesus with gifts of God (for his royalty), Frankincense (for his divinity) and Myrrh (for his humanity). The letters also abbreviate the Latin words, “Christus, Mansionem, Benedicat” meaning “May Christ bless this house.”
