This being the weekend, Thanksgiving weekend, I thought you would enjoy a few “Fun-facts about Thanksgiving Day itself.
The first Thanksgiving Day was at Plymouth, Massachusetts
The Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford, had organized that first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. He invited the neighboring Wampanoag Indians to the feast. That first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.
Mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, corn on the cob and cranberries were not present at the first meal. Most likely it was Lobster, rabbit, chicken, fish, squash, chestnuts, hickory nuts, onions, radishes, carrots, and eggs were thought to be among the dishes. Not sure if turkey was served either.
The pilgrims didn’t use forks; they ate with spoons, knives and fingers.
Abraham Lincoln issued a “Thanksgiving Proclamation” on October 1863 that officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving.
Each year the United States alone consumes about 280 million turkeys on this day.
The average weight of a turkey purchased at Thanksgiving is 15 pounds.
The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds, about the size of a large dog. Gobble! Gobble!
